Development and Fundraising

June 2024 marked five years since I transitioned from Arts Programming/Community Engagement to Fundraising. In these five years, I have leaped from one major New York City institution to another, gaining valuable experience in all levels and areas of fundraising; from small community Foundation grants, to large Federal Government capital grants, to seasonal Corporate sponsorship and in-kind donations, to Individual Giving and Board Relations.

The transition from programming to fundraising was natural for me because of my practice as a visual artist, performer, and choreographer. So often artists and makers are expected to contextualize their work when applying to residencies, performance opportunities, fellowships, and other types of programming led by cultural institutions, as well as managing relationships with arts and cultural leadership.

For 15 years I had spent my time going through the motions of application processes that oftentimes are very much the same steps as the grant proposal process. Another reminder to other creatives that many of the skills they have acquired in their artistic careers are translatable to other areas.
